A weekly cleaning checklist matters more in a UAE apartment than most people expect. Windows stay shut, the AC runs for most of the year, and the US Environmental Protection Agency notes that people spend about 90 percent of their time indoors, so the dust, sand and kitchen grease that settle each week are what you live with. This guide gives you a room by room weekly cleaning checklist you can print, the jobs that UAE homes need on top of the usual list, and a simple order of work so one session covers the whole flat.
In practice, a good weekly clean comes down to four things done in every room: clear and wipe the surfaces you touch, clean the kitchen and bathrooms properly, wash the bed linen and towels, and finish with the floors. For a 1 bedroom apartment that is usually two to three hours of work once a week, or a few short blocks spread across the week.
Why a weekly checklist works better than cleaning when it looks dirty
Fine sand and dust settle on every flat surface within days, and limescale from hard water builds on taps and shower glass every time they dry. Left for a month, both take far longer to remove than a weekly wipe. A fixed list also stops the same jobs being skipped every week, which is how ovens, skirting and AC grilles end up needing a deep clean.
If you would rather split the work by day, our home cleaning schedule for busy families gives each weekday one zone. The checklist below is the complete list of what a weekly clean should cover, whichever way you divide it.

The weekly cleaning checklist, room by room
Tick each line once a week. The tasks assume a typical apartment with one or two bedrooms, an open or closed kitchen and one or two bathrooms.
| Room | Weekly tasks | UAE extra |
|---|---|---|
| Kitchen | Wipe worktops, splashback, cupboard handles and appliance fronts; clean the hob and inside the microwave; scrub and dry the sink; empty and wipe the bin; mop the floor | Check the fridge before bin day and throw out anything past its date |
| Bathrooms | Clean the toilet inside and out, basin, taps, mirror and shower or bath; wipe the shower glass; change towels and bath mats; mop the floor | Dry taps and glass after cleaning to slow limescale |
| Bedrooms | Change and wash bed linen; dust bedside tables, shelves and lamps; tidy surfaces; vacuum the floor and under the bed where you can reach | Wipe window sills, where fine sand collects first |
| Living and dining | Dust surfaces, TV unit and decorations; wipe switches, remotes and door handles; vacuum the sofa and rugs; vacuum and mop hard floors | Wipe the AC grilles you can reach safely |
| Entrance and hallway | Shake out or vacuum the door mat; wipe the front door handle and shoe rack area; mop the floor | Sand comes in on shoes from the corridor and lift |
| Balcony | Sweep the floor; wipe the railing and outdoor table if used | Clean the sliding door track so sand does not blow inside |

Kitchen
The kitchen collects the most mess in the least time, so do it properly once a week even if you wipe up daily. Degrease the hob and the wall behind it, run a hot cloth over cupboard handles and the fridge door, and clean the microwave before splashes bake on. The oven, extractor filter and cupboard interiors belong on the monthly list, not the weekly one.
Bathrooms
Clean from the cleanest area to the dirtiest: mirror and basin first, then the shower or bath, then the toilet, then the floor. Keep bathrooms aired after showers, because the EPA’s guide to mould and moisture points out that mould needs moisture to grow. For white marks on taps and glass, see our tips on bathroom limescale removal in the UAE.
Bedrooms and living areas
Dust from high to low so falling dust ends up on the floor you are about to vacuum. Wash bed linen every week: Hamad Medical Corporation advises washing sheets and pillowcases weekly in water hotter than 55°C to control dust mites, and vacuuming carpets and soft furnishings weekly. For more ways to keep sand and dust down between cleans, read our guide to reducing dust at home in the UAE.
The order of work: one session, no going back
Working in the right order saves time because you never clean a surface twice.
- Tidy and gather. Collect rubbish, dishes and laundry from every room before you start cleaning.
- Strip the beds. Put the linen and towels in the wash first so the machine works while you clean.
- Dust high to low. Shelves, frames, AC grilles within reach, then furniture tops.
- Kitchen. Surfaces, hob, microwave, sink and bin.
- Bathrooms. Mirror, basin, shower or bath, toilet.
- Glass and sills. Mirrors, inside of windows and the balcony door track.
- Floors last. Vacuum every room, then mop hard floors, finishing at the front door.
Never mix cleaning products. The Washington State Department of Health warns that bleach mixed with ammonia or acids releases toxic gases, so rinse a surface before switching products.
Weekly, monthly or deep clean: what goes where
A weekly list stays short because some jobs only need doing once a month or a few times a year. Keeping them off the weekly list is what makes it realistic.

- Every week: the checklist above.
- Every month: inside the fridge, oven and extractor filter, skirting boards, door frames, washing machine seal and drawer, and AC filters if you can remove them safely.
- Two to four times a year: a full deep clean with inside cupboards, behind appliances, windows and grout. Our deep cleaning checklist for UAE homes lists every task.
Small flats need a slightly different approach, with fewer rooms but more traffic in each one. Our small apartment cleaning tips show how to keep a studio or 1 bedroom flat under control in less time.
When a weekly cleaner makes sense
If the list keeps slipping, a regular cleaner can take the whole weekly checklist off your hands. On our cleaning price calculator, a weekly visit for a 1 bedroom apartment is typically about 3 hours, around AED 90 to 135 in Sharjah and Ajman or AED 105 to 150 in Dubai. Our guide to cleaning services price per hour shows the hours and rates for every home size.
Our regular home cleaning service follows a checklist like this one, and you can ask for the same team where possible. Laundry and ironing, changing linen or cleaning inside the fridge can be added as extras at an extra cost, confirmed at booking.
Frequently asked questions
What should I include on my weekly cleaning list?
Include the jobs that build up within a week: kitchen surfaces, hob, sink and bin, bathrooms and toilets, bed linen and towels, dusting, and vacuuming and mopping every floor. In a UAE apartment, add window sills, the balcony door track and the entrance mat, because that is where sand collects. Keep oven, fridge and cupboard interiors on a monthly list so the weekly one stays realistic.
What needs to be cleaned every week?
Anything you touch daily or that gets wet: worktops, the hob, sinks, toilets, showers, door handles and switches. Bed linen and towels also need washing every week, and Hamad Medical Corporation recommends washing sheets weekly in hot water to control dust mites. Floors should be vacuumed and mopped weekly as a minimum.
What is a standard cleaning checklist?
A standard cleaning checklist lists the tasks for each room, so nothing is skipped: kitchen, bathrooms, bedrooms, living areas, entrance and floors. Most are split into daily, weekly and monthly tasks, with a deep clean a few times a year. Our deep cleaning checklist covers the jobs that sit beyond the weekly list.
How often should an apartment be cleaned?
Most apartments need a full clean once a week, with a quick daily tidy of the kitchen and bathroom. Homes with children, pets or heavy cooking often do better with two visits a week, while a single person in a studio may manage a lighter weekly clean. Our guide to how often to book a regular cleaner helps you choose.
What are the 7 steps of cleaning?
There is no single official list, but most professional routines follow the same order: tidy and remove rubbish, dust from high to low, clean the kitchen, clean the bathrooms, clean glass and mirrors, vacuum, and mop. Working top to bottom and floors last means no surface gets dirty again after you clean it. Rinse between products and never mix them, as the Washington State Department of Health warns.
