The guests have gone, the majlis is full of cups, there is rice under the sofa and a juice stain on the rug. Cleaning after a party or an Eid gathering feels endless when you start at random, but it goes quickly in the right order. This guide gives you a ten minute reset for the night itself, a room by room plan for the next morning, how to treat the most common food and drink stains on sofas and carpets, and when it makes sense to book a cleaner instead.
If you are getting the home ready before guests arrive, our guide to cleaning before Eid and family visits covers that side. This post is about cleaning after a party.
The ten minute reset before bed
You do not need to clean everything tonight. A few jobs now stop small messes from turning into stains, smells and sticky floors by morning.
- Food first. Put leftovers in covered containers and into the fridge. The US FDA’s cold facts about food safety say leftovers should be refrigerated within 2 hours, or within 1 hour when the air is above 90°F (about 32°C), which in a UAE summer includes a terrace or a hot kitchen.
- Empty the cups. Pour leftover drinks into the sink and rinse sugary juice and soft drink glasses so they do not dry sticky.
- One bag per room. Walk through with a large bin bag and collect plates, napkins, cans and wrappers. Tie the bag and take it out, so food smells do not settle overnight.
- Soak the heavy dishes. Fill serving trays, pots and greasy platters with warm soapy water. Grease and rice that dry overnight take three times as long to scrub.
- Blot any fresh spill now. A spill treated in the first minutes usually lifts. Blot it with a clean white cloth and deal with it properly in the morning (see the stain section below).

The next morning: a room by room order
Work in this order so you never clean a surface twice: rubbish and air first, then the kitchen, then living areas, then bathrooms, and floors last.
| Area | Jobs | Why this order |
|---|---|---|
| Whole home | Open windows or run the extractor fans, do a second rubbish sweep, collect cushions and throws that need washing | Clears food and incense smells and gets the clutter out of the way |
| Kitchen | Run the dishwasher, wash pots and trays, wipe worktops, hob, sink and splashback, clean the front of the fridge and handles, take out the kitchen bin | The kitchen holds the most grease and food waste |
| Majlis, living and dining | Treat stains, vacuum sofas and floor cushions including under the seat cushions, wipe coffee and dining tables, switches, door handles and remote controls | Crumbs and spills hide in fabrics and on shared touch points |
| Guest bathroom | Clean the toilet, basin and taps, wipe the mirror and floor, empty the bin, put out fresh towels | The busiest room of the day, used by every guest |
| Floors | Vacuum rugs and carpets, then vacuum and mop hard floors from the far end of each room towards the door | Everything above has already dropped its crumbs |
| Balcony or terrace | Collect rubbish, wipe tables and chairs, sweep, rinse sticky spots | Sugar spills attract ants quickly in the heat |
After a big Eid lunch, check under and behind the sofas and floor seating with a torch. Rice, sweets and dates roll a long way, and they are what brings ants and cockroaches a week later.

Food and drink stains on sofas, rugs and carpets
The same first steps work for most party stains. Always test any cleaner on a hidden spot first, and check the care label on sofas and cushions: some fabrics should only be cleaned with a dry method.
- Lift solids. Scrape off food gently with a spoon or a blunt knife, then vacuum loose crumbs so they do not turn into paste.
- Blot, never rub. Press a clean white cloth or paper towel onto the stain to soak up the liquid. Rubbing spreads it and pushes it deeper into the fibres.
- Use cool water and mild soap. Mix a few drops of washing up liquid in cool water, dab it on, then blot. Hot water can set some food stains, especially anything with egg or milk.
- Rinse and blot dry. Dab with plain water to remove the soap, then press with a dry towel. Leftover soap attracts dirt and leaves a ring.
- Let it dry with air. Run the AC or a fan. Do not put heavy furniture back on a damp rug.
| Stain | What to do |
|---|---|
| Juice, soft drinks, tea and coffee | Blot, then cool water with a little washing up liquid. A small amount of diluted white vinegar can help with old tea or coffee marks on carpets, after a patch test. |
| Oily food, curry and ghee | Scrape, then sprinkle baking soda or cornflour to soak up the oil for 15 minutes, vacuum it off and dab with soapy water. |
| Sweets, chocolate and sticky dates | Let chocolate harden and lift it off, then treat what is left with soapy water. For sticky sugar, warm water dissolves it better than scrubbing. |
| Henna | Act fast: scrape off the paste, blot, then dab with washing up liquid in water. Henna sets quickly, so an old henna mark on a light carpet may need a professional. |
| Candle wax | Let it harden, scrape off what you can, then place paper towel over it and press with a warm iron to lift the rest. |
If a stain has been sitting for days, or the sofa is velvet, silk or another delicate fabric, stop before you make it worse and ask for specialist help.

Smells, fabrics and the kitchen bin
- Air the rooms. Open windows early in the morning when it is cooler, or run the extractor fans in the kitchen and bathrooms.
- Wash what you can. Cushion covers, table cloths, throws and guest towels go in the machine. Curtains near the dining table can hold food and oud smells.
- Freshen the rug. Sprinkle baking soda on rugs and carpets, leave it for 15 to 30 minutes and vacuum it up.
- Clean the bins. Wash the kitchen bin and the bin under the sink with hot soapy water and let them dry before putting a new bag in.
- Clear the fridge. Throw out leftovers you will not eat in the next few days, and wipe any spills on the shelves. Our guide on how to clean inside a fridge has the full steps.
Cleaning up after a big Eid gathering
Eid often means several days of visitors in a row, so think in two stages.
- Between visits: a 20 minute reset of the majlis, the guest bathroom and the kitchen, with rubbish out every evening and dishes done the same day.
- After the last guests: one proper clean of the whole home: sofas and floor cushions vacuumed, rugs treated and vacuumed, bathrooms scrubbed, the kitchen degreased, and floors mopped throughout.
- Lend a hand as a guest. If you are visiting, offering to clear plates or take out a bag of rubbish at the end is always appreciated.
If you prepared the home with our Ramadan deep cleaning checklist, the after Eid clean is much lighter, because the deep work on grout, vents and cupboards is already done.
Cleaning after a party: when to book a cleaner
A cleaner makes most sense when the event was large, when you have a second gathering coming, or when you simply want the morning back. When you book, tell us:
- The size of the home and the number of guests, so the visit is booked for enough hours.
- Which rooms were used, including the majlis, terrace or garden.
- Any stains or delicate fabrics, with a photo if you can. Sofa, carpet or mattress care is not part of every visit, so ask when booking and we confirm what is possible.
- Any extras you want added. Changing bed linen in guest rooms, ironing or cleaning inside the fridge can be added at an extra cost, confirmed at booking.
For a normal clean up after a party, an hourly regular cleaning visit is usually enough. After a big gathering, or if the home needs a full reset, book a one off clean instead. Our guide to what is included in a deep clean explains the difference. You can check typical prices on our cleaning price calculator.
Frequently asked questions
How to clean after a party?
Do a ten minute reset before bed: put leftovers in the fridge, empty cups, bag the rubbish and soak greasy dishes. Next morning, air the rooms, then clean the kitchen, then living areas and the guest bathroom, and finish with floors so you never clean the same surface twice. Treat any stains as early as you can.
Should you clean before or after a party?
Both, but differently. Before, focus on what guests see and use: the entrance, living and dining areas, the guest bathroom and the kitchen. After, focus on food waste, dishes, stains and floors. Emptying the dishwasher and the bins before guests arrive makes the clean up afterwards much faster.
How to remove a drink stain from a sofa?
Check the care label first. Blot the spill with a clean white cloth, then dab with cool water mixed with a few drops of washing up liquid, blot again, rinse with a little plain water and press dry with a towel. Test on a hidden spot first, and if the label says dry clean only, ask a professional.
How to get dried food stains out of carpet?
Scrape off as much of the dried food as you can and vacuum the crumbs. Dampen the stain with cool water and a little washing up liquid, leave it a few minutes to soften, then blot from the outside in. For oily food, sprinkle baking soda first to soak up the grease. Rinse, blot dry and let the carpet air dry.
What should you do after cleaning?
Air the rooms, take all the rubbish out, wash the cloths and mop heads you used and leave them to dry, and put cleaning products away out of children’s reach. After a party, it also helps to check under sofas once more for food and to run the dishwasher one last time.
