The International Labour Organization counts 75.6 million domestic workers worldwide, and in UAE homes the first question families ask about help at home is often not who, but where: should she live with you or come in each day? A live in maid shares your home; a live out maid arrives for her hours and goes home afterwards. This live in vs live out maid guide compares the two on space, hours, privacy, cost structure and the kind of home each one suits, and shows where an hourly cleaner fits in. If you want to see who is available, you can browse housemaid profiles on our workers pages.
In short: a live in maid suits families with a spare room and a bathroom for her, who need help early, late or at short notice, such as with young children or an elderly parent. A live out maid suits smaller flats and families who want their home to themselves in the evening and help at fixed daytime hours. If you mainly need a clean home, hourly cleaning may be all you need.
Live in vs live out maid: the key differences
Agency guides and Google’s AI Overview compare the two arrangements on the same points. The table sets them side by side.
| Point | Live in maid | Live out maid |
|---|---|---|
| Where she lives | In your home, in her own room | In her own accommodation; travels to you |
| Space you need | A private room, ideally with its own bathroom | No extra room |
| Hours | Agreed daily hours, with help close at hand mornings and evenings | Fixed daytime hours, then she leaves |
| Privacy | Someone else lives in your home | Your home is yours after her shift |
| What you provide | Room, meals and daily living needs on top of pay | Usually pay or a service fee only; she covers her own housing |
| Best for | Villas and larger flats, young children, elderly care | Smaller flats, working couples, routine housework |

Space and privacy
A live in arrangement only works if she has a private room where she can rest and close the door. In many UAE flats that is the maid’s room off the kitchen; in a villa it may be a room near the service area. If your flat has no spare room, a live out maid or hourly help is the practical choice.
Privacy works both ways. With a live in maid, your family shares its evenings, weekends and arguments with another adult, and she lives at her place of work. Agree house rules early: quiet hours, visitors, phone use and which areas are hers. A live out maid gives both sides a clear end to the day.
Hours, flexibility and rest
The main reason families choose a live in maid is availability. She is at home for the school run, can start dinner before you get back, and is there if a child wakes early. That does not mean she is on duty all the time: working hours, breaks, the weekly day off and leave must be agreed, and she needs real rest to do the job well.
A live out maid works set hours, often a daytime shift. That suits housework, laundry and cooking prepared ahead, but not late evenings or overnight care. Before you choose, write down a normal week for your household and mark the hours you actually need help.
Cost structure, not just salary
The two options are paid for in different ways, so compare the total, not one monthly number.
- Live in. On top of pay, you cover her room, food and daily living needs, and there are hiring costs that depend on how you recruit. Our housemaid cost guide lists what goes into a full time hire.
- Live out. Monthly live out packages from licensed providers usually fold housing and transport into the fee, so the monthly figure tends to look higher. Ask each provider exactly what the fee includes.
- Hourly cleaning. You pay only for the hours booked. Our cleaning price calculator puts regular cleaning at typically AED 30 to 45 per hour in Sharjah and Ajman and AED 35 to 50 in Dubai.
Salaries, visa costs and package prices change and depend on nationality, experience and the hiring route, so get written quotes before you decide.
Hiring the right way
Whether she lives in or out, she must be employed through a legal route, and the rules differ between hiring through a licensed recruitment office and recruiting directly. Khaleej Times explains the difference between the two, and the Emirates News Agency summarises domestic workers’ rights. Check current guidance from the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE) or ask the licensed office before you agree terms. This guide does not give legal advice.
Once the route is clear, interview properly. Our list of housemaid interview questions covers experience, references and situation questions, and works for live in and live out candidates alike.
Which one suits your home?

Choose a live in maid if
- you have a private room for her, ideally with a bathroom
- you need help early in the morning, in the evening or at short notice
- childcare, elderly care or daily cooking is a big part of the job
Choose a live out maid if
- your flat has no spare room, or you value evenings to yourselves
- the work fits into fixed daytime hours
- you want a provider to handle her housing and transport
Choose hourly cleaning if
- you mainly need cleaning, not cooking or childcare
- a few hours once or twice a week would cover it
- you would rather not employ anyone directly
Many smaller households land on the third option. Our guides to a part time maid in Dubai and to whether hiring a cleaner is worth it work through the numbers, and our regular cleaning service covers kitchens, bathrooms, dusting and floors weekly or fortnightly. Extras such as ironing or changing linen can be added at an extra cost, confirmed at booking.
Frequently asked questions
What is live-in housemaid?
A live in housemaid is a domestic worker who lives in her employer’s home, usually in her own room, and works agreed hours there: cleaning, laundry and often cooking and childcare. Because she lives on site, the family provides her room and meals as well as pay. A live out maid does the same work but goes home after her shift.
What does a live-in maid do?
A live in maid usually handles daily cleaning and tidying, laundry and ironing, and often cooking, shopping and help with children or elderly family members. The exact duties depend on what is agreed with the family, so write them down before she starts. Our interview questions guide helps you check she is right for the tasks.
What are the disadvantages of having a maid?
The main drawbacks are cost, less privacy, and the responsibility of being an employer: agreeing hours, rest days and leave, handling paperwork and managing the relationship. A live in maid also needs a private room. If you mainly need a clean home, hourly cleaning avoids most of these, because the cleaning company employs the cleaner.
Is having a maid worth it?
It is worth it when the hours you get back matter more than the cost, for example for families with young children, two working parents or an elderly relative at home. For a small flat that only needs cleaning, a few hours of hourly help a week is usually better value. Work out the hours you actually need before you decide.
How much does a live-out maid cost in Dubai?
Monthly live out maid packages are priced by each licensed provider and usually include her housing and transport, so ask for a written quote that lists what is included. If you only need cleaning, an hourly cleaner in Dubai typically costs AED 35 to 50 per hour, according to our price calculator, so a three hour weekly visit comes to about AED 420 to 600 a month.
